Aquarium additives and conditioners are used to ensure that your water parameter are kept at optimal levels. Additives are used to replenish vitamins and minerals that may be lost or consumed over time. Reef aquariums need specific minerals and trace elements such as calcium, iodides, magnesium, strontium and more; which require continual replenishment. Buffers that boost alkalinity, PH, and or calcium are examples of standard additives used in reef aquariums. Water conditioners are used to prepare and maintain the aquarium water and detoxify chlorines, chloramines or heavy metals that may be harmful to aquarium inhabitants.
