Medications are used to treat and cure sick and ailing aquarium specimens. They are broken down into three basic catagories: parasitic, bacterial, and fungal. Parasites are the most common cause of discomfort to the fish, and can can sometimes be the easiest to diagnose and treat. Fungal infections are usually secondary infections generally caused by physical abuse or injury and are also fairly easy to diagnose and treat. Do to the wide range of different bacterial infections, they are generally harder to pinpoint and therefor more difficult to medicate. Bacteria can be either gram - or gram + and it is necessary to treat accordingly. Some invertebrates and fish are more sensitive to most medications, so diagnose and treat carefuly. Media and resins are used in filtration to remove and absorb chemical impurities and dissolved organics. They can also be used to remove harmful residual medications and discolored aquarium water. These items are used in both fresh and saltwater.
