A step up from hang on filters, canisters transfer water to and from the tank through hoses, allowing you to keep it in your stand. This lets you keep the filter hidden from view, as well as allowing you to set the tank right up against the wall. Those that utilize the basic sponge/charcoal/bio-media system also have extra compartments, allowing you to add extra medias or resins if needed. There are also wet-dry trickle canisters that allow you to use floss, bio-balls or pieces of live rock rubble if you choose. Although harder to come by, diatom filters allow you filter out etremely minute particles, thereby "polishing" your water. There are also hang on the back canisters with sponge/charcoal for standard filtering and fine micron cartridges for a quick polish. Regular cleaning of the filter and it's components is recommended to ensure both the efficiency and life of the filter. Efficient and versatile, canisters are bound to get the job done.
