The act of reverse osmosis entails the passing of water through thick, minutely perforated, polymer membranes, that allow the passage of water, but not other particulates and ions. This process creates purified water, free of phosphates, nitrogen complexes, chlorines, and other detrimental impurities. Reverse Osmosis, or OR water, is highly recommended for salt and reef tanks, since the lack of excess contaminates discourage the growth of unwanted algaes. It is also good for freshwater tanks that require a softer water and lower PH. There are a variety of RO/DI systems available, from simple two stage to more complex set ups. These set ups ensure a constant and convenient supply of pure water for top offs or larger water changes.
